Small-fry Hobart

Occupying an iconic space in the north-western corner of Hobart’s CBD, Small-fry 
was opened in 2014 by brothers Rhys and Bryn Hannan. Small-fry is a contemporary kitchen, café and private dinner space centred around a single steel bench. Lined with convict laid sandstone, Small-fry’s single room seats all its guests together providing a unique eating and drinking experience. Featuring alongside chef Rhys Hannan, and providing another of Small-fry’s unique offerings to the Hobart café scene is April Matusik (Rhys’s partner) and her much sought after glazed doughnuts.

Based on principles of quality, technique, attention to detail with a touch of irreverence, Small-fry offers a restaurant level of quality in its menu and service style while retaining the informal and casual nature of a neighbourhood coffee shop. The completely exposed kitchen and service area allows guests to interact with one another and the staff to produce a convivial and welcoming atmosphere. 

Regulars are known by name and although the café – offering breakfast and lunch 7 days a week – does not take bookings, 
Small-fry does host private dinner parties in the evenings where guests can indulge in the food, wine and company of friends in the privacy of their own restaurant for the evening. 

Since 2014 Small-fry has developed a reputation in Hobart for its quality and unique setting, its outstanding coffee and of course, April’s Glazed Doughnuts. Together with a seasonally changing menu, Small-fry is cementing itself as a destination venue in Hobart for locals and visitors alike.
