James Boag Brewery

Established in 1881 on the banks of the Esk river, James Boag Brewery has established a worldwide reputation for their beer.

Right from the very beginning, Scotsman James Boag and his son James Boag Jnr recognised that the purity of the local water and the quality of the natural ingredients that they had available in the north of Tasmania meant that they were able to produce a beer of superior quality.

Successive generations have continued this tradition of excellence and today the beers produced by this Tasmanian brewery are recognised around the world for their taste and unwavering excellence.

To fully appreciate the iconic brewery, you can join a guided brewery tour which takes you through the history of brewing on this site, from the beginnings when the Cornwall and Esk breweries were amalgamated to create the entity that operates on this site today, and explains the process of how the various beers are now brewed in this state of the art brewery. The tours run seven days a week, and start and end at the James Boag Brewery Experience. This historical building now houses a tasting room, plus an extensive historical display of various aspects of the brewery’s past. From changes in brewing techniques to various forms of advertising used by the brewery over the years.

For the photographers amongst you, there is a great display of the controversial photography created by Helmut Newton for the brewery between 1994 and 2002. The brewery tour ends with a beer and cheese tasting for those aged 18 and over. The venue also offers a store and café, which features light meals and Tasmanian cheeses as well as the full range of James Boag beers.

Today, the James Boag Brewery still insists on using crisp Tasmanian water and the finest hops and barley to produce a range of exceptional beers. James Boag’s Premium is the flagship of the brand and is rightly acclaimed both at home and internationally, thanks to its smooth, sophisticated style. There is also a light version of this beer which provides a full flavoured experience that is every bit as sophisticated as its Premium Lager alternative. The range also includes a number of other quality beers including the highly sought after James Boag Wizard Smith – a legendary pale ale in the English style, crafted from a traditional malt brew and a dry-hopped process.
