World Heritage Cruises

The Grining family have been cruising the Gordon River and Macquarie Harbour since 1896, when Harry Grining and his brothers started taking passengers into the wilderness of the Gordon River.

Now, five generations on, Troy and Guy Grining continue this tradition – albeit in a state of the art, Tasmanian-built ship the MV Harbour Master. Capable of handling everything the wild West Coast can throw at her, the ship has been specially designed to protect this precious part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed wilderness forever.

The family thrive on being able to share the stories, and amazing history of this wild and remote area with people from all around the world and have a huge respect for their beautiful surroundings. Their long association with the region makes “cruising with the locals” a truly authentic experience. On board you are treated to a delicious buffet lunch that caters for a large range of tastes. Their salad recipes have been passed down through the generations and are still very popular today, there is something to be said for tradition!

Troy’s children Riley and Georgia have joined the business and continue the family tradition. Their inherent love for the area spurs them on to research ideas, so that the company can continue to provide a world-class product in a sustainable and ecologically respectful manner.

Departing each day at 9am, you cruise up the harbour and enter the deep tannin-stained waters of the Gordon River, with its beautiful reflections and wilderness that comes right down to the water’s edge. The trip includes two onshore guided tours: Sarah Island, a harsh penal settlement operating in the 1820s, and Heritage Landing on the river, where you can wander amongst ancient trees, and imagine life here as a convict or pine cutter.
