Annette and Nevil Reed know just what their consumers mean when they say, “I want a tomato that tastes like a tomato and I want garlic with real flavour”!

It was on their Selbourne property, just half an hour’s drive from Launceston, that the Reeds fell in love with heirloom tomatoes.

“We started growing 40 heirloom varieties for a Tasmanian seed distributor, to complement our garlic, truffle and Dorper lamb production. We’d never grown a tomato from seed before and in our first year grew 1600. From that very first crop we were hooked,” Annette said.

While the Reeds still produce tomato seed, their passion is for the colour, taste and variety that are found in fresh, field-grown, chemical-free produce.  Throughout the Summer tomato season, you will find Four Springs Produce heirloom tomatoes at the Launceston Harvest Farmer’s Market and at selected local restaurants.

“We find great satisfaction in being able to meet our customer’s specific needs and to teach the uninitiated about our products. A tomato is not just a tomato! The slower growing and vine ripening process of our heirloom tomatoes produces more distinctive, individual flavours. Red, yellow, green, black or orange; early, mid and late fruiting; rich and tangy or sweet and mild, there is a special tomato to meet every taste and requirement.” Nevil added.

Along with tomatoes, the Reeds produce an exceptionally well-flavoured Purple Stripe Garlic. Planted by hand into rich, red Selbourne soil, every clove develops into a rich, flavoursome bulb. None of the garlic is wasted, with many of the earlier scapes being processed into a delicious mild salt prior to the main harvest. The fresh garlic is mainly sold locally and is also available as quality seed.
