bilambil berry farm

Bilambil Berry Farm is a family run, boutique blueberry farm on 10 hectares at Turners Marsh.  Established almost 30 years ago, the orchard contains about 2000 blueberry plants. Fifteen years ago the farm adopted organic management practices and within three years received organic certification from Tasmanian Organic-Dynamic Producers.

Kent and Alyssa Mainwaring took over the property four years ago. They have embarked on an extensive program to upgrade the orchard and the farm infrastructure, including replacing under performing plants, upgrading the packing shed and other out buildings, renovations to the family home and general farm beautification works. Kent and Alyssa have embraced the principles of organic production and their goal is to produce the very best blueberries without the use of any chemical inputs.

The last harvest produced more than eight tonnes of premium fruit – the majority of which was sent to wholesalers in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

The only local outlet they supply is Ye Olde Green Grocer in Launceston. During the harvest, which lasts for about seven weeks, Kent’s eldest son Fraser assumes the position of Orchard Manager. The youngest member of the family, Will, helps out in the packing shed. Kent and Alyssa have a focus on employing people from the local area. Many of their staff members have worked on the property every season for 10 years or more.

Kent and Alyssa are very positive about the future. They are confident that demand for their premium product will remain strong and that they can increase fruit yield. They believe they are proof that from even a relatively small land holding it is possible to create a financially viable enterprise founded on sustainable principles.
