At the time, if someone had told Paul and Jan Amourgis that their move from New Zealand to Tasmania would lead them down the path to making ice cream and gelato they would have been extremely skeptical.  But 20 years on, the former ‘Kiwi’ sheep and beef farmers turned ‘Tassie’ dairy farmers have found their niche, producing award winning gelato and ice cream from the milk produced on their dairy farm near Deloraine.

The couple began making and selling their ice cream 10 years ago under the brand name ‘Van Diemens Land Creamery’. Their focus on using high quality, natural ingredients and using minimal processing techniques has gained them a reputation for quality, great tasting ice cream and their growing base of loyal customers keep coming back, year after year for more. Blood Orange Sorbet, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Cookies & Cream Gelato are amongst the most popular flavours, and everyone has a personal favourite. A number of reputable restaurants in the state including ‘Pierres’ in Launceston have their ice cream on their menu and ‘Levee’ at The Seaport in Launceston and ‘Saltshaker’ in Swansea have it available on their menus or as scoops.

Van Diemens Land Creamery has won numerous awards at The Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards over the years. The most prestigious to date was in 2013 when their Lemon Sorbet won Reserve Champion.

More recently the Amourgis family opened a café at Christmas Hills Rd, on the Bass Highway. Offering locally produced deli products as well as coffee or milkshakes made with freshly pasteurised milk from the Amourgis’ farm, there’s something for everyone. A firm favourite is the buttermilk pancakes and ice cream, and the café has a viewing window so that visitors can watch the production process while they sample the freshly made ice-cream.
