John, Keith and Chauncey Hammond have been breeding Japanese Full-Blood Wagyu on Robbins Island since the early 1990’s. Situated on the North Western tip of Tasmania, the prized cattle are grazed naturally and sustainably on lush pastures without supplements or hormones, all while breathing the cleanest air in the world. During the annual muster, bands of horsemen swim the cattle through saltwater channels at low tide to move them peacefully between grazing areas.  The cool climate, salt air and pristine environment are ideal for naturally raising some of the most tender and best tasting beef in the world.  

The Robbins Island Wagyu brand is processed at the Smithton export works and is marketed by Greenham Tasmania (Cape Grim Beef) and available through domestic and international channels. Greenham Tasmania has an excellent reputation for processing and packaging high quality beef products. Managing Director, Peter Greenham sees the partnership as a highlight of Greenham’s history in North Western Tasmania, “The opportunity to work with the Hammonds and their outstanding Wagyu product is fantastic, I see a big future in both the domestic and international markets”. 

Already widely sought after by food identities like Tetsuya Wakuda, numerous international chefs are also lining up to add this unique beef product to their menus. When Tetsuya recently visited the Hammonds he commented, “Your grass fed Wagyu has an exceptional and unique flavour, the best that I have tasted - this is what you should be doing”.

Robbins Island Wagyu features very fine marbling (BMS 4-6 & 7+) while the taste signature is a great combination of specific Wagyu genetics and regional pasture influences. The beef has received national awards at tasting competitions (Paddock to Palate) and is a finalist in the Delicious magazine produce awards for 2012. It is tender, juicy and has an enduring taste that is perfectly suited to both Australian and International palates.
