lake barrington vineyard and white rock vineyard

Ideally situated in some of the most beautiful and secluded parts of rural Tasmania, Lake Barrington and White Rock Vineyards offer the perfect combination of high quality white, red and sparkling wines.

As its name suggests, Lake Barrington Vineyard overlooks the glistening 20km lake in the picturesque Kentish region of the state’s north-west. Its award-winning sparkling wine, Alexandra, is made from slowly ripened grapes grown at the cool site, which allows a steady build-up of acid to create a well-balanced bubbly.

Charles and Jill Macek bought the 30-year-old vineyard in 2005 and decided to concentrate on its flagship wine, the sparkling, which is made using the traditional Méthode Champenoise meaning it undergoes a secondary fermentation inside the bottle, creating bubbles.

The vineyard’s cellar-door has one of the most stunning backdrops in Tasmania, with a perfect view of the internationally-acclaimed rowing lake, dense Australian bushland and rolling green hills. It is open weekends from 11am to 4pm from November to April and is an ideal setting for a picnic and bottle of wine.

White Rock Vineyard is a boutique family-owned and operated vineyard 25km east of the lake. Owner Phil Dolan also manages Lake Barrington Vineyard. White Rock specialises in a selection of top quality cool climate red and white wines. In 2014, it became the first vineyard in Australia to produce the red wine Dornfelder, which went on to win a gold medal and the overall trophy for Best Other Red at the International Cool Climate Wine Show. The German red wine was developed to allow cool climate regions to produce a heavier red than Pinot Noir, and it has a beautiful rich colour.

White Rock is situated on a north-facing protected hill on the sheltered banks of the Mersey River in the Meander Valley region. The warm northerly aspect coupled with cool nights creates the perfect climate for the development of intense and lasting flavours. White Rock’s award winning wines include Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Dornfelder (Dawn Red), which are available online and at the Lake Barrington cellar door.
