hellyers road distillery

While it might help to be a devotee of fine single malt whisky, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a visit to Hellyers Road Distillery in Burnie is an experience that’s solely the domain of those who imbibe in the pleasures of a crisp, flavor-some single malt whisky. There’s much, much more on offer.

Hellyers Road Distillery is Australia’s largest boutique distillery with the first flow of spirits taking place on 29 January 1999 and first product sales in 2006. Located in pristine dairy farming country on the outskirts of the Burnie township, the distillery is a fully-owned subsidiary of Tasmania’s second largest milk processing company, Betta Milk, which radically and fortuitously reshaped its business model following deregulation of the Australian Dairy Industry in 1996. Today, the business remains in the ownership of local dairy farmers and the descendants of the farmers who founded the milk cooperative in 1956.

Hellyers Road Distillery came about through the foresight of Laurie House, the former general manager of the milk business who today remains a company director. House recognised the potential of an established, yet fledgling industry that was already producing single malt whisky in Tasmania. Eighteen years later, his foresight has seen Hellyers Road Distillery become one of the key players in an industry that is now drawing world-wide attention for the quality of its spirits.

Hard work and perseverance to craft premium single malt products, using local produce, has been recognised at home and abroad including an annointment as ‘Best New World Whisky’ (Pinot Noir Finish variety) at the prestigious Whisky Live event in Paris 2013.

Aside from the distillery operation, Hellyers Road offers a superb café and Interpretation Centre, cellar door, tastings counter and gift shop, open to the public most days of the year (closed public holidays). The café with its scenic views over tranquil Emu Valley is renowned for the quality of its whisky infused menu while the guided ‘Whisky Walk’ (a fully interpreted tour of the distillery and bond store) is a mustdo for every visitor.
